Bernard Law Montgomery

Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, KG, GCB, DSO, PC, nicknamed "Monty" and the "Spartan General", was a senior officer of the British Army. He saw action in the First World War and Second World War.

Lord Montgomery visited New Zealand from 16 to 31 July 1947. During this time he also visited Palmerston North on 25 July 1947 where a reception was held in his honour at the Opera House.
