DescriptionA series of photographs showing the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (Bernard Law Montgomery) visiting Palmerston North on 25 July 1947.
He visited New Zealand from 16 to 31 July 1947. At Palmerston North there was a combined civic and Returned Services welcome for him at the Band Rotunda and a function afterwards at the Opera House. The Field Marshal was then driven in an open topped car to the aerodrome the next day.
The first photograph shows Lord Montgomery together with A.E. Mansford, then Mayor of Palmerston North. Other photographs were presumably taken during his reception at the Opera House.
