The students were residents of College Hostel, the first purpose-built student residence, which eventually became known as the Old Hostel.

The Matron, Miss Charlotte Warburton is seated in the second row, eighth from left. Seated next to her on the right, in the exact middle of this row, is the College Principal, Professor Geoffrey Peren.
