    THE COLLEGE



    Palmerston North Teachers Col-
    lege was established in 1956 as
    New Zealand's sixth teachers col-
    lege with Mr K. A. North as the
    first Principal. The original buildings
    were in Princess Street, and Grey
    Street.

    The College is now divided be-
    tween the Grey Street site and the
    New College now being established
    on a 25-acre site in Centen[...]n addition to new buildings already
    available the College has the use
    of a campus school built in the
    College grounds for use as a Nor-
    mal school when the bui[...]for women. The
    name honours a man whose work
    for education has earned special
    respect in this City.

    Stages[...]Campus were
    officially opened by the Minister of
    Education, the Hon. H. L. Pickering.
    on 19th September, 197[...]r-
    ing. Gifts of trees were also plant-
    ed by the Education Boards associ-
    ated with the College. Wanganui.
    Taranaki and Hawkes Bay. The
    foundatio[...]gs are to
    be suitably marked in the grounds.

    The College is administered by
    the Palmerston North Teachers Col-
    lege Council, whose independent
    aut[...]ber 1968 on the authority of the
    then Minister of Education. the Hon.
    A. E. Kinsella.

    In 1964 the Wanganui Education
    Board took the first step of setting
    up an interi[...]esent
    Council represent the Taranaki and
    Wanganui Education Boards, the
    Department of Education, Massey
    University, the New Zealand Edu-
    cational[...]s first meeting on the
    21st November, 1968.

    The College establishment in-
    cludes three normal schools —[...]ediate Nor-
    mal School in Ferguson Street and
    the College Street Normal School
    in College Street. A large number
    of teachers in the city and sur-
    rounding districts also work with
    the College as associate teachers.

    The College Arms follow the
    ancient and very strict traditions of

    The Arts Trust of Palmerston
    North Teachers College is an in—

    Teachers College Council, but the

    of a $3,500 sculptural work for the
    College and the establishment of a

    Council. Day to day management

    ORGANISATION

    On arrival at College students are placed in alphabetical groups, and
    these groups remain the basis for organising classes in the Education
    Department and in English Studies. All other clas[...]t few days of orientation and familiarisation the
    College programme is arranged so that first, second and t[...]er week are allotted to the
    compulsory courses in education, English, mathematics and curriculum
    studies, and[...]classes within the time allocation set out in the College timetable. The

    precedence over all other commitments.

    Wednesday is known as College Day when students on school
    practice are in College. All students return to College for the day. First
    and second years take lectures with Selected Studies departments, third
    years with Education. Each year group meets on Wednesday mornings

    his mentor for the first term of the College course. The staff leaders

    the College Council and the Teach-

    Students are required:
