    The College

Palmerston North Teachers College was established in 1956 as New
Zealand’s sixth teachers college with Mr K. A. North as the first

principal. The original buildings were in Princess Street, and Grey
    Street.

The college is now consolidated on a 10 hectare site in Cente[...]r students. The name honours a man whose

associated with the college, Wanganui, Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay.
The founda[...]opened on the 14th April, 1982 by the Minister of
    Education, the Hon. M. Wellington.

The college is administered by the Palmerston North Teachers
College Council whose authority was confirmed by Parliament with
amendments to the Education Act in 1969, the council having been
established in November, 1968 on the authority of the then Minister
of Education, the Hon. A. E. Kinsella. However, as early as 1964 the
Wanganui Education Board took the first step for setting up an

1982 proved to be the only year when the College had full use of the
buildings specially designed for teacher education on the Hokowhitu
Campus. Because of drastic reductions nationally in quotas of

students for teaching, the College agreed to share its buildings with

Wellington to Palmerston North Teachers College. Continuing
teacher education at a distance becomes a major responsibility for
the College with some sharing of tutoring with the other teachers
    colleges.
