Professor Giselle Margaret Byrnes is an internationally recognised historian and senior academic leader with a career spanning research, teaching, and university governance in both New Zealand and Australia. She has held the position of Provost at Massey University since January 2016, bringing with her a commitment to advancing equity and access in higher education and to championing the university's role in building cultural, social, and intellectual capital for the public good.
Born in Timaru, New Zealand, Byrnes was educated at the University of Waikato, where she earned her BA in History and English in 1988, followed by an MA in History in 1990. She completed her PhD in History at the University of Auckland in 1995 with a thesis titled Inventing New Zealand: Surveying, Science, and the Construction of Cultural Space, 1840s–1890s.
Byrnes began her career as a senior research officer with the Waitangi Tribunal in New Zealand’s Department of Justice, where she contributed to foundational work investigating claims related to the Treaty of Waitangi. She later held academic positions at Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Waikato, where she became Chair of the History Department and subsequently served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Postgraduate). She also held the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Law, Education, Business and Arts at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Australia.
In 2006, Byrnes was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and served as Fulbright Visiting Professor in New Zealand Studies at Georgetown University’s Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies in Washington DC. She also served as President of the New Zealand Historical Association (c. 2005–2007).
Her research has focused on colonial and postcolonial histories, particularly settler–indigenous relationships, the mechanisms of colonisation, and the contested legacy of land and power in Aotearoa New Zealand. Byrnes is the author of Boundary Markers: Land Surveying and the Colonisation of New Zealand (2001), which examines how European systems of land measurement redefined Māori landscapes. She also wrote The Waitangi Tribunal and New Zealand History (2004), an influential work analysing the Tribunal’s impact on historical narrative and legal redress in New Zealand. As editor of The New Oxford History of New Zealand (2009), she played a pivotal role in shaping contemporary understandings of the nation’s past.
Byrnes' scholarship has appeared widely in books and academic journals, and her contributions continue to inform both scholarly discourse and public understanding of New Zealand's history.
