Stubb's Anatomy of the Horse

The first publication in 1766 of "The anatomy of the horse" was a landmark in the understanding of animal anatomy, presenting for the first time detailed and accurate depictions of the horse. Remarkably, it is a monumental work both of science and of art. George Stubbs is renowned for his portraits of horses - he was one of the first artists to depict them accurately - a product from his deep knowledge of their anatomy. This work was originally published in 1766, and was reissued with the plates printed on wove paper, watermarked 1815/1. Massey University Library's copy is of this 1815 reissue.
