On 30 July 1979, the New Zealand Government introduced 'carless days' in a bid to counteract the petrol shortage resulting from the second 'oil shock' of the 1970s. Under legislation, all owners of petrol-driven cars selected one day a week they would not drive their vehicle.  A coloured sticker on the car windscreen indicated their chosen day and anyone caught driving their car on that day was fined.  The measures did little, if anything, to reduce petrol consumption and the initiative was scrapped in May 1980.
