This photo is one of the many items from A.G. Bagnall's 'Tongariro Collection', an area Bagnall was particularly interested in and collected prolifically in.  There are seven photographs taken by Hubert Earle Girdlestone, a Government surveyor, based in Wellington. Girdlestone was an alpine climber and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He was a Sergeant in the first World War and was killed in action August 28, 1918. In 1922 Matterhorn Peak in Tongariro National Park was renamed Girdlestone Peak in his honour.
