The rugby club was formed in 1928 by students at the newly-established Massey Agricultural College and, in their characteristic bright blue jerseys, the players played in their first competitive game on 18 May the following year.
When university status was obtained in 1964, the club was renamed the Massey University Rugby Football Club (MURFC).
Membership of the club is limited to students only and the club is managed by an executive appointed from the membership. Some university alumni and staff help out in administrative roles.
In addition to minutes of club meetings, correspondence files, publications, photographs and the odd video recording is held.
